League change?

I thought about posting this under Andrew's post, but I decided it should get its own. Should we move the trading deadline to the end of July? It is currently August 23rd and that seems a little late for a keeper league. I think it should be a fairly hard decision whether or not to "dump" and give up on the season but with a deadline 5 weeks before the end of the season the league could be decided by who gets the most in dump trades.

I think this is a good idea (I think a day or two after the MLB deadline would be perfect...we know who we lose to the NL and have a few days to adjust), but I don't want to implement it, at least not this season. I think it's great that we're still tinkering with the minor details of our league, because things can always use improvement, but I'd like to minimize tinkering with seasons that are already in progress. It sort of applies to Andrew's suggestion too...it's not a bad idea, I'm just a little wary of changing things mid-season.

Normally I agree - things should really be changed mid-season, but altering the trading deadline 1-2 months ahead of it doesn't really impact this season. Our current deadline is just something arbitrary from Yahoo.

Yeah, I'd be for it. One month before the end of the season is just too close and will lead to 50% of the league dumping, which isn't really that cool.

Hmm, not really a fan. I understand that the trade deadline serves a good purpose and all that, but honestly it has just kind of always annoyed me. Generally, I don't like being limited with what I can do with my players, and specifically, I like to be able to trade whenever I want to. Trading is the most fun and interesting part of fantasy baseball, and moving the deadline up would decrease overall trading as well as the overall amount of time during which trades will occur. It would add 3 more weeks of comparative boredom.

And I second Caleb's concern about not making the change this season. It does make an impact. I don't want to show my hand too much, but there are players who I didn't deal away tonight who I might have been more likely to deal away if I had known that the trade deadline would be sooner.

If we set the deadline to July 31st, that would still leave plenty of time to make trades. It does suck to make changes midseason, but at the same time, wouldn't we rather have a league where it isn't a dump off on August 25th as the top two or three teams try to pick up players?

yeah, that's the most important point to me. Leaving the deadline only 1 month before the season ends means that likely only 2-3 teams will have a real shot at the title - which leaves 5 teams to dump their players to those 2-3 teams a month before the end of the season - that's not a very fun title run. dump trading should be a part of a keeper league but having more than 50% of the league dump is pretty lame.

I would certainly be willing to move the trade deadline earlier in the season next year. It is the same deadline as we had last year (i think it was August 21st last year, but opening day was earlier). By moving the deadline up, you encourage people to dump earlier in the season than they normally might. With a late august deadline, I feel as many people as possible can stay in the race. I'd rather have 4 or 5 teams dump try to dump late in august than have 3 or 4 teams dump before the all star break.

I vote to move it earlier this year, even though it probably hurts me. Dumping is a bad thing for the league, and an earlier trade deadline means less dumping.

I don't know if it means less dumping... you might have the same amount of teams wanting to dump, just earlier in the season, which would be worse.

I think making the deadline earlier will create less dumping, not more. In late July or early August you're at 50 points and 6-8 points are you really doing to pull the plug? I know I wouldn't. I probably wouldn't at 48 either.

Luke - in a yearly league I honestly wouldn't have a problem with not having a trading deadline, but a keeper league is a completely different ball game. I don't want to value dump trades over the draft, keepers, and in season management.

Let's say that my team slumps in July and August so I'm at 42 points and the leaders are at 55 or so (hopefully this is an unfounded hypothetical). I could dump Bay, Dye, Abreu, Soria, and even one of my keepers (say, Alexei Ramirez, since Andrew needs MI) for Longoria. That would instantly massively tilt the balance in Andrew's favor and would be at no cost to me whatsoever long term. If there are 8 weeks instead of 4 the possibility of a comeback is much, much higher so I'd be inclined to hang on to those non-keepers and make a run at this season.

My fear is that people will err on the side of dumping, trying to get a good keeper for next season, rather than make an improbable run for the last 2 months of the season. No?

Spencer said...

that is the fear, but people are much more likely to dump knowing there is only one month left rather than two. with one month left even the most irrational of us would know there's not much of a chance if we're back 10 points or so. with two months it becomes a harder decision.
