Question

What happens if a player retires mid-contract? Voided, right? The only player I could really see that happening with is Nathan if he suffers a setback in recovery from Tommy John, but I don't think we've addressed this specifically.

I'd say the contract is voided. That seems fair, as it is something that is outside the realm of what we can normally predict. It's not fair to someone keeping Buchholz if he decides to retire and become a male model.

Yeah, but if you keep a 36 year old coming off of tommy john surgery you should probably be responsible for his salary if he retires. Otherwise it provides a pretty nice safety net.

For Nathan, it won't matter. If he can't come back from injury and close games, I'll cut him probably before he ultimately retires anyways. I'm not going to waste a keeper spot on a middle relief guy - esp. for only a $6 hit.

However, Bill raises a good point as it would apply to all career ending injuries. For example, if Carlos Santana runs into perhaps a bigger stronger Ryan Kalish this year will Bill be on the hook for three years?

I feel like most players don't go the Gil Meche route and retire during the offseason. They try to play, find they can't, and then retire rather than get cut. So what we need to do is set a cutoff time for retirement- if the player is still active by XX date, he counts against your keepers, otherwise you are off the hook. Two logical dates would be the keeper deadline or the draft. What do people think?

That seems reasonable to me. I would say the keeper deadline, although it isn't too terribly likely that a player will retire between the keeper deadline and the draft.
