Is everyone else as sick and tired as me of the whole "manny doesn't hustle, manny being manny, etc." storyline played out 100+ times over every newspaper and blog every season? I mean, can you actually remember a time when Manny didn't reach base or was thrown out b/c he dogged it? It might have happened once or twice, but come on. So what if he had to sprint to make it to second base when a three legged cow could have made it standing up? Get over it.

I do think it is something that is completely overblown and over-analyzed, but the fact remains that he has made plays that have hurt the team and continues to make them. In the World Series he ended up with a single instead of a double when he stopped and watched it. He did the exact same thing in Japan. That he makes those kinds of mental mistakes must drive Tito nuts, but, on the whole he's a great player, and I love that he's on the Sox.
To a certain extent I think a lot of it is backlash after he got a free pass for so many years.
That is true, but I can't figure out if Manny's baserunning errors are any different than the average player. He's certainly not a good base runner, but how worse is than other players of his size and age? I don't see it as backlash so much as re reporting a convenient and generally accepted story line, which may or may not be true.
Can anyone explain Manny's $20mm options? I.e. if the Sox pick up his 09 option, is he then in another "contract year" where the sox can pick up his '10 option? Or do the sox have to pick up both '09 and '10 at the end of the year?
I think what makes the errors so obvious is the fact that they're clearly mental mistakes and not hustling.
As Manny's options, it looks like they're two, 1 year options at $20 million / year. There is no buyout associated with the option. In general, Cot's baseball contracts (http://mlbcontracts.blogspot.com/) is a fantastic resource for information on current and prior contracts.
