The horror, the horror

I think Wade Davis may just have made the very worst start for anyone all year. He managed to put up a WHIP of 10 and an ERA of 54. That's six walks, four hits, six runs in an inning plus. And that is with a reliever coming in and bailing him out with the bases loaded and no one out. Will Smith managed to get a sac fly and a double play, so it could have been worse! Assuming I hit the innings cap exactly, he added 0.008 to my final WHIP and 0.043 to my ERA. Amazing.

Does anyone else have a terrible start that they would like to share?

Ouch. And to think I almost streamed Davis instead of Blanton this week.

I'll submit Josh Johnson's April 11th start to the competition: 1.1 IP, 7 hits, 2 walks, 6 ER, 1 K.

Pretty similar to Wade Davis today, but I think I win the tiebreak because (1) I paid $13 for Johnson and (2) I have an amazing ability to start him when he blows up and bench him when he pitches well. Behold:

Josh Johnson in my lineup: ERA 11.81, WHIP 2.81
Josh Johnson on my bench: ERA 3.35, WHIP 1.25

Man, bench Josh Johnson is pretty solid. I wish I could start that guy!

Ouch. I do think that hurts. Looking back, I remember a TERRIBLE Phil Hughes start against Seattle, no less: 6 hits, 7 runs, 2 walks, 0 Ks and was in Mark's starting lineup. That has to take the cake, I think. I guess Mark just doesn't bitch enough.

While they're not starters, I think my "solid relievers to help my ratios" have been worse:
Carter Capps and Sean Doolittle combined for 2 IP, 12 H, 3 BB, 12 ER, good for a 54 ERA and a 7.50 WHIP.

Also, since it was over 2 innings, that 54 ERA has twice the impact than the 1 IP from Davis.

Well, Trevor Bauer did a great job getting 2 major league batters out on Friday night....the other 7 were the problem. 6 hits, 1 BB, 0 K, 5 ER. I guess it doesn't count though, since he was on my bench.

More importantly....Will Smith plays baseball now??? Man, that guy can do anything.

Yeah, I've been looking at picking up Wade Davis all year. Not sure why. I think Davis's is historical though, the most pitches ever while recording only 3 outs.

I think the worst starts (both mine) of the season come down to Bedard April 14 and Hughes May 15th. Hard to pick the winner:

Bedard @ Oakland
one out, two hits, four walks, six earned runs (walk, walk, walk, strikeout, wild pitch, walk, single, homerun).

Hughes v Seattle
Two outs, six hits, two walks, seven earned runs (fly out, walk, single, single, single, walk, homerun, single, fielder's choice, double).

For those counting at home that's 1.0 IP, 8 hits, 6 walks, 13 ER, 1 K. ERA 117, WHIP 14.0

If I hit the innings limit, those two starts will be responsible for .094 in ERA and .011 in WHIP.

But no, I'm not complaining. I'd still be last in ERA and WHIP without those starts!

And Taylor starts Wade Davis and is burned. Moral of the story- never, ever start Wade Davis.

Yup. Also another fine start for Bench Josh Johnson this week.

Not last in WHIP anymore! Thanks Wade Davis.
