Symmetrical standings

After three weeks, our standings form a perfectly symmetrical reflection around the number 45. I wonder how often that happens.

Week 2 Notes

Mark's week 1 still stands head and shoulders above anyone else's performance so far. He beats two teams' season total in runs, three in home runs, two in RBI, and one in stolen bases.

Despite low season rankings, Luke's team had a solid week offensively. His players his nine home runs, to go with 31 R and 38 RBI, while adding 50 points to his average.

Spencer, who dominated in pitching in the first week, tacked on a full run to his ERA and 0.16 to his WHIP. To answer Spencer's question why I didn't focus on early season pitching in last week's post, early season stats are unbelievably volatile. He is doing very well in the counting stats, though, as he leads by 10 strikeouts and is 20 Ks ahead of the main pack. This is not just a product of his innings total so far (2nd in innings at 90), as he is the only team with a K/9 of over 9.

Despite ESPN projections that had him third in stolen bases and having Mike Trout in the fold, Luke is stuck at a single stolen base, as his earlier post pointed out. Stolen bases can come in bunches, so Luke doesn't need to be worried just yet. For example, both Andrew and Spencer are leading the way with stolen bases, with 11 apiece, however both of them accumulated the lion's share of those stolen bases in the first week (nine and eight, respectively).

I think it is worth noting how tight the standings are so far. Although I'm 10 points in front of second place, the difference between second and eighth is only 8.5 points. Granted, the total points don't really mean much at this point, but there is not much spread between the best and worst performing teams at this point in the season.

Finally, I'm going to make another plug for the ESPN trading block. It is available from your main team page, or here. Basically, you can list any players you're interested in trading or are untouchable, what positions you have available or need, and what players on other teams you're interested in. If we all use it, it could be an amazingly useful resource for getting deals done.

The last of the zeros

It's the 11th day of the season, and my team still has yet to record a stolen base. It seems highly unusual to me to have anybody still be rocking a zero in any category this far into season. But to make things even stranger, and more depressing, my team was also the last to record its first home run (Youkilis this past Friday) and its first save (Balfour this past Saturday). I didn't actually go back and check, but I think this has to be the first time that one person in the league was the last to record three different stats. It's one of those things where I have to look at my team and say, "I'm not even angry, I'm impressed!"

A few notes from the first week

We're off and running! While it is really too early to take a meaningful look at the standings, I thought I'd pull out a few tidbits.

Mark's offense has been absolutely dominant so far this season. Chris Davis' historic start is leading the way, but Adam Jones, Jed Lowrie, Nelson Cruz, and Matt Wieters are also having an excellent first week. He is leading in runs, RBI, and average, and is tied for first in home runs. He has three days with 11 or more RBI and four days with two or more home runs. For the entire season, Luke's team has two home runs and 12 RBI for the season.

Andrew's offense is doing all right, despite incredibly low home run totals. He's hit three home runs, but somehow has 33 RBI, good for second. An incredible 90% of his RBI have come from driving in other players; last year I led the way in that stat with 74% of my RBI coming from . On the other end of the spectrum, both Kate (10 HR, 25 RBI) and I (8 HR, 21 RBI) have low RBI totals despite solid power numbers, meaning that 40% and 38% of our RBI totals are from our players driving themselves in via a home run. Last year Kate led in that category, with 29% of her RBI come from her own player's home runs.

On the pitching side, I'm second in ERA despite being solidly last in WHIP. Unsurprisingly, these numbers tend to track one another, as Mark had the biggest differential last year (2 points), so expect my ERA or WHIP to move one way or another.

Who wants Phil Coke?

Phil Coke ended up getting the first save of the year for the Tigers last night.  I'd like to try and trade him before Jeter comes back from the DL so I don't have to drop a different pitcher.  I'm mostly interested in an outfielder or a third baseman, but am open to other offers, of course.  I'd also be willing to trade Veras instead of Coke, but would be expecting more in exchange.
