It feels too defeating to punt after pulling myself out of the cellar, but also would not be very smart to mortgage the future for a small chance of victory. Of course, once the top teams complete dump trades my chances will be reduced to nil. Got to love it!
I think the middle of the standings are fluid enough that 2nd place is definitely up for grabs. If Caleb makes a big dump trade and really strengthens his team, well, that's something else entirely, but right now I think the top 4 have a shot.
Of course, Caleb is now $2 away from the salary FLOOR, so if a deal is worked out, he'd basically be able to add someone's entire team.
I take it back re: the salary floor. I somehow forgot to include Coco Crisp in the deal, so Caleb is at $228, salary wise, but he still could pretty much add an entire team's worth of talent.
Mark, you could actually try and sell off your keepers now in order to take a shot at first, and still be able to recover if you don't move up in the standings. Why not sell keepers now, see if you improve further, and then if you don't, you could try and trade for different keepers at the deadline?
I'd be inclined to do the opposite of Luke's suggestion. With Mark's team, I'd sit tight til the deadline. He's got a number of decent keepers already but also a team capable of a top 3 finish. Why not wait and see where things are in August and see whether his team is hot or cold, and make small trades to bolster it or add one or two keepers at that point?
Honestly, given the entire cluster of teams in the 5-8 range and my irrational faith in my team, I'm not sure I'm going to punt, at least until much later in the season. There are way too many points to gain, and I'm going to have a HUGE second half.
