Woo! Turned four dollars of FAAB into CC Sabathia. In Mark's defense, both McCarthy and Anderson are pitching awfully well and their low ERAs are backed up by their FIP and xFIP.
The thing about 2 for 1s is that they always look bad to outsiders, but the fact is that sometimes they make sense based on each team's roster. If you've got a stud at one position and a dud at another, it might make sense to trade the stud for 2 guys and then fill both positions with mediocre players. In Mark's case, without this deal he'd only have 4 starters.
I don't hate this trade for Mark at all, although McCarthy does very little for me. Anderson looks like an ace, and is a reasonable keeper at $16 and 23 years old.
The trade that blew my mind was Walden for Anderson. Presuming they put up reasonably similar rate stats, trading 10-15 wins, 2-3x as many Ks and 2-3x as many innings for 30 saves just doesn't make sense to me. Kate was certainly dealing from a position of strength, but her solid lead in Ks and Ws is a lot more vulnerable now.
I think if I didn't already have 3 players (C. Santana - woo! Snider and Matusz - ugh) under contract for next year, plus Hosmer at $2 it would have been much, much more difficult to trade away Anderson. But with all the risk I'm buying out with Sabathia, who has been the most reliable pitcher in the league over the last few years, I had to jump at it.
Finally, some chatter here. Why else would I make such a controversial move?
I normally do not like to make 2-1 deals. However, from the perspective of the bottom of the standings, I don't see how Sabathia is going to help me make up much ground. McCarthy and Anderson are pitching well and improves my depth at a position that I sorely need. Anderson is a decent keeper and McCarthy has potential if he can improve his K rate a bit - his improved fastball and curveball are encouraging.
I do disagree about the innings pitched though. If McCarthy or Anderson get injured that will change things but I think I am not being overly optimistic to to expect to get 75-100 more innings out of the duo over CC. At some point, CC is going to stop throwing 230+ innings per season.
I think CC is pretty much a lock for 230. He's thrown 230+ innings every year since 2007. I think it is possible for Anderson and McCarthy to get up to 350, but if they each matched their career high you're only looking at 277 innings.
I think only giving McCarthy 50 more innings pitched for the season is a bit pessimistic and when you are talking Anderson's 'career high' you are pointing to 2 seasons.
If they do combine for 277 innings, definitely good deal for Bill. For this season, I would place the over/under closer to 315.
Eh, I suppose I am a hater. I think I'm alone in my relatively low valuation of closers. So I would definitely just ignore me. YOu certainly did have considerable depth to trade from.
Spencer, meanwhile, just bought super low on Delmon Young.

It's clear who the best player in the deal is though. I don't buy these kind of 2 for 1s.
Yeah, I really don't love it for Mark either. The Anderson/McCarthy duo might only throw 50 more innings than Sabathia.
Yup. Not quite as bad as Walden for Anderson, though.

Either way, a solid set of moves for Bill.

MZ - noticeably silent

Bah- this is why I hate trading. That said - I'll feel a lot better when I see all 8's all across the right side of the standings.
Kate - haters gonna hate. I think you made your team better, overall, considering how deep your pitching is.
