Happy Trade Deadline Day

For some reason, it's one of my favorite days of the year. I'll be checking SOSH & ESPN every 3 minutes until dinner time.

Haha. Me too. I've got EEI streaming, Comparing Jason Bay to Manny Ramirez on Fan Graphs, SOSH is on auto refresh, and reading the live blogs on ESPN.

Cheers to working for Academia.

Bay deal is dead :-(

Kemp?

The strange thing is I sort of want a deal to happen, not since it's necessarily the right deal, but at this point I've spent way too much time following all the potential scenarios that something not happening would be a total buzz kill.

Oh, i didn't think of streaming EEI. I like that. I could actually get things done, maybe.

I'd be happy with Kemp. To be honest, I won't mind much if a deal ends up weakening the '08 team, if it brings in a high quality young player who'll be around for a while. I'd like Bay, too, and I don't think that trade's as dead as they say it is.

I'm almost certain that they're going to end up trading Manny. I'll be surprised if they don't. All the pundits seem to think the opposite, so I'm probably wrong, but it really seems for real this time. I just hope they don't get mired in complicated scenarios that they can't pull off, and end up trading him at 3:55 for pennies on the dollar because it's all they can work out.

That's it... in the 11th Hour. See ya Manny.

We lose Manny, Moss, and Hansen and get Bay back? I'm happy with Bay, but I think there must be another move we haven't heard about, someone to replace Hansen in the bullpen. I really hope they did something to bring in some bullpen help.

Someone to replace Hansen's 5+ ERA? I think B-H Kim is available.

not really a fan of this trade. this only makes sense to me assuming that we really thought manny wouldn't play (or play well) for the rest of the year. the only real value is one more year before we make our long-term outfield decision.

not to replace Hansen, so much as to take his place. I fully expected a bullpen upgrade at some point, and now it seems instead they're gonna have to replace him with someone from AAA for no gain.

The more I think about it, though, the more I like getting Bay. Solid D and baserunning, signed at 7.5M next season...hopefully he doesn't have a long adjustment to the AL.

I like the deal. The difference between Manny and Bay isn't all that much this year. Bay has an OPS+ of 135 verses Manny's 140. I would say Manny was a 50/50 shot at playing out the season. We'll have Bay for another season at a 1/3 the price. With that extra 12 million, they can pick up a quality setup guy. Hopefully this deal re-energizes much like trading Nomar did in 04.

the real issue is we didn't improve this year's club at all - no bullpen help, at best Bay is Manny with better defense. It's true that we get value this year, but this year's club is the same, and that club has been getting smoked. It'll be interesting to see if this sparks the club or just makes everyone depressed.

You guys should read Peter Gammons' article on why the Sox traded Manny. Basically, he was taking games off against tough starting pitchers, and when he missed 3 games in a row due to "knee soreness", he couldn't remember which knee had been sore when it was time for an MRA. So they did both. That, combined with all the pouting in the media meant he had to go.

I'm alright with the deal. It is a lateral move this year, and will help next year because the free agent market next year wasn't really going to have anyone worthwhile to play LF. The money is actually what bothers me the most. I didn't feel like they needed to pick up ALL of his contract, but maybe it allowed them to use lesser prospects. And Hansen and Moss really are lesser prospects. They could end up having solid ML careers, but guys who project as a 4th OF, and a middle innings guy (so sad that that is how Hansen project snow), are fungible. If Moss steps it up, like Murphy has this year, they could regret the deal a bit, but with Manny's sideshow, it is hard to fault them for trying to get him off the team.
