Since the right-hander is up to 215 innings this season, the Rays have decided to shut down James Shields, effective immediately.
This is quite a surprise. We thought Scott Kazmir might get shut down, but he'll make two more starts and be limited to 100 pitches in both. J.P. Howell is going to start Wednesday in place of Shields, who finishes his breakthrough year 12-8 with a 3.85 ERA and a 184/36 K/BB ratio.

It sure is. We're getting to the point in the season where minor things end the season. Crawford looks like he's done. Manny is still riding the bench for me. Mark has managed to snag a couple two start starters this week to regain the #2 spot in Ks thanks to some quality outings from Volquez and Javier Vasquez. Cabrera, not so much. I'm impressed that his staff has survived the loss of Bedard.
Of course, I find out Crawford is hurt on Monday morning. If everything goes perfectly and they don't decide to shut him down he'll be back on Friday...
and mr. swisher gets a 3 game suspension for charging the mound....and even a-rod is slumping for me now!
the worst is that i am very close to having 42 points but i need to pass YOUUUUK in all of the categories...so annoying to be chasing someone who is probably not even paying attention anymore
The spoiler of the year award definitely will go to Youk if Bill wins. I am chasing Youk in 2 categories that I'll probably need to win in order to take the victory.
Don't dog on Cabrera... 5 K's in 5 innings and more to come this sunday! Volquez and Cabrera making a late run at team MVP! Bedard WHO?
