One more keeper rule question
When you say that someone can be "kept" for 3 years, does that mean I can KEEP them for 3 years (and have them for 4 years on my roster, this year, and then the 3 years I keep them) or does it mean I get them on my roster for 3 years?
I thought that a 3 year keeper limit would be 3 consecutive seasons on your team. So all players that are on your roster at the end of this season that you keep will have finished 1 year out of the 3. This would not apply to the prospect picks who would only be considered in their 1st year when they reach the 100 AB, 50 IP mark.
What? That kind of sucks, honestly. If you only get to keep a player for 3 seasons, it makes it very hard to build effectively for the future if your season is already in the shitter. I think three years on a roster is too short, but if you're worried about people hoarding players, maybe we could make it more expensive each year to keep someone? Maybe the cost bumps up a round each year (ie, first year you choose to keep a player the cost is equal to the round you drafted them, the following season it's one round higher, etc). I really think that only being able to keep someone for two seasons is too short.
Yeah, truthfully I always thought we had meant that you get to have a player on your roster for 4 seasons total. With only 5 keepers and an expanded roster next year, that makes domination by one team even less likely.
The biggest threat to a keeper league is having 1 or 2 teams with such an advantage at the start of the season it makes the rest of the league uninterested. You will probably only keep the real value picks for more than 3 years anyways. After 3 drafts I can definitely see a team with 5 players, all drafted in the later rounds that are now all top 20 players. Coupled with a 4th draft where you have all high draft picks you'd have that situation that I'm afraid of. I'd rather err on the side of caution and make sure everyone has a shot each year than have one team develop into a dynasty.
The difference is really just a preference question. I prefer a "keeper light" league while you would rather put more emphasis on the keepers. The expanded rosters will make it less likely, but not entirely unlikely.
If we all want 4 years, I'd be in favor of upping the round you drafted him in like you suggested. Perhaps by 10 percent, rounded up, per year after the first year kept. So a 25th round pick would become a 25th, 22th, then 19. A 4 round pick would become a 4th, then 3rd, then 2nd. An 11th would be an 11th, 9th, 8th... etc.
